DESCRIPTION
Large hand thrown earthenware bowl by Marsha Owen probably from the 1980's. North Carolina has a very long tradition of hand thrown pottery throughout the state. The bowl is both utilitarian and decorative and very much indicative of the prevalent style in the last quarter of the twentieth century. The bowl measures approximately 16 3/4 inches in diameter and is 11 1/4 inches tall. The bowl is signed on the bottom and matches the documented signature of Marsha Owen.
BIOGRAPHY OF DESIGNER
Marsha Owen (1954 - 2023) a native of Mississippi, Owen lived in North Carolina, a center of craft pottery production. She took her first pottery course at the North Carolina State University Craft Center in 1975 and knew immediately that she had found her vocation. Owen established Marsha Owen Pottery in 1983. From 1984 to 1985 she was a resident potter at Penland School of Crafts, Penland, North Carolina. Since then she has broadened her expertise to include almost any utilitarian object that can be made in clay. In 1993 her husband, Rick Moss, joined her adding his hand building and surface decoration skills as well as carrying out the necessary business chores. From 2011 to 2013 Own was a pottery teacher at Claymakers, Durham, North Carolina and in 2013 she gave private pottery classes in Raleigh, North Carolina. Marsha Owen passed in 2023.
CONDITION
The bull is in good vintage condition, no chips or cracks. There is a small factory white dot on the under belly of the bull, not very noticeable.
