BIOGRAPHY OF THE DESIGNER
Born in 1919 in Gotland, Sweden, Hans-Agne Jakobsson was undeniably one of the world's most versatile and productive lighting designers, creating more than 2,000 models over a fifty year career. He apprenticed as a carpenter before studying architecture in Gothenburg, Sweden, then worked as an industrial designer for General Motors. After working as an assistant to the designers Carl Malmsten and Werner West, he founded his own companyin 1951; Hans-Agne Jakobsson AB in Markaryd, Sweden and began producing his own designs. Jakobsson was strongly inspired by Poul Henningsen's non-dazzle lighting, in which diffused indirect lighting structures a space and transforms the fixture into a sculpture. That aesthetic can be seen throughout his oeuvre.
