BIOGRAPHY OF THE DESIGNER
Born in 1919 in Gotland, Sweden, Hans-Agne Jakobsson was undeniably one of the world's most versatile and productive lighting designers, creating more than 2,000 models over a fifty year career. He apprenticed as a carpenter before studying architecture in Gothenburg, Sweden, then worked as an industrial designer for General Motors. After working as an assistant to the designers Carl Malmsten and Werner West, he founded his own company in 1951; Hans-Agne Jakobsson AB in Markaryd, Sweden and began producing his own designs. Jakobsson was strongly inspired by Poul Henningsen's non-dazzle lighting, in which diffused indirect lighting structures a space and transforms the fixture into a sculpture. That aesthetic can be seen throughout his oeuvre.
CONDITION
The lamp is in good vintage condition. There is a moderate number of chips on the bottom edge of the globe and the top of the base. However, the brass candle mechanism covers both and they cannot be seen. There are a few flea bite chips on the base bottom edge, but they are noticable only under close scrutiny. The brass candle mechanism has some slight discolorations and some fine scratching. Together the lamp displays beautifully. The brass has been cleaned and polished and has no protective coating.
