Josef Hoffmann Basket
Josef Hoffmann Basket
DESCRIPTION
Josef Hoffmann (1870 -1956) was an Austrian architect and designer. He was one of the founders of the Vienna Secessionist movement and cofounded the Wiener Werkstätte (Vienna Workshop). Hoffmann's most famous architectural work is the Palais Stoclet, in Brussels, a pioneering work of Modern Architecture, Art Deco and peak of Vienna Secession architecture. At the Wiener Werkstätte in 1903 Josef Hoffmann developed designs for various household objects made of gitterwerk, or gridwork, such as the basket. The gridded sheets of base metal were thus the structure of the objects as well as their decoration. The line was produced between 1905 - 1910. The basket for sale is a re-issue of a Josef Hoffmann design produced by Bieffeplast in the 1980's. The basket measures approximately 15 1/4 inches tall, 8 inches wide and 8 inches deep. The basket has a decal on the bottom reading "J.Hoffman by Bieffeplast".
