Deco Neoclassical Lamp

Deco Neoclassical Lamp
DESCRIPTION
Vintage lamp manufactured by Mutual Sunset Lamp Company, probably in the 1940's. The style of the lamp is a unique blend of Neoclassical and Art Deco design. The lamp has glass elements along with textured painted finishes. The designer of the lamp is unknown and the lamp is unmarked, but is well documented. The lamp stands approximately 23 1/2 inches tall, 7 1/4 inches wide at its widest and 5 inches deep. The lamp comes with a brass metal shade painted black on the outside. The shade measures approximately 6 inches in diameter at the top, 13 3/4 inches at the bottom and 6 inches tall.
In 1924 two companies, Sunset Lighting Fixture Company and The Mutual Lamp Manufacturing Company, merged to become the Mutual Sunset Lamp Manufacturing Company. The Mutual Sunset Lamp Company was located on the corner of Lafayette and Houston Streets (21-25 E. Houston St.) in New York City and relied on steam-powered machinery for manufacturing. Noted American furniture designer Gilbert Rohde designed pieces for the Mutual Sunset Lamp Company in the early 1930s. One of Rohde’s iconic lamp designs was featured as part of Mutual-Sunset’s light fixtures included in the 1933 Chicago World’s Fair. A 1936 catalog shows Mutual Sunset operating showrooms at the Empire State Building, Chicago’s Merchandise Mart, and the Transportation Building in Los Angeles. During WWII, Mutual Sunset served as a subcontractor to the Bendix Corporation manufacturing marine lighting for the U.S. Mutual Sunset continued to operate and manufacture lamps until it was formally dissolved in 1993.
